Mac Mini 2018 teardown shows swappable storage traded for memory upgrades

The orange-outlined rectangle is the SSD, soldered to the logic board.

We rejoiced when Apple’s Mac Mini 2018 introduced again the power to improve memory, which had been soldered in its 2014 predecessor. Now iFixit’s teardown shows that the storage is soldered to the logic board as an alternative.

If it needed to be one or the opposite, it does make extra sense to solder the storage. Since Apple does not use M2 NVMe, an exterior SSD through the Thunderbolt three port might be quicker, even with no drive that maxes out at 20Gb per second.

iFixit’s Mac Mini 2018 teardown reveals that Apple retains its memory in a cage.

Another notable takeaway from the teardown: The service-center-upgradeable memory is encased in a cage. That explains how Apple was ready to make use of quicker 2,666MHz RAM within the small house with out elevated interference — mini PCs normally incorporate slower memory. And the facility provide will increase from 85 watts to 150w in an effort to assist the higher-power processor and port choices.
